3 comebacks to use when someone is judgmental about your life choices.

3 comebacks to use when someone is judgmental about your life choices.

-I respect my choices even if they differ from yours.

This response sets a boundary and clearly communicates that the speaker values their own choices regardless of other’s opinions. This phrase allows you to assert your autonomy and communicate boundaries in a respectful and effective manner while telling the other person to stop judging your choices.

-Are you talking from personal experience?

This response challenges their judgement by questioning their personal experience with the situation. It challenges their credibility and implies that there thoughts may be based on assumptions or lack of understanding. Remember if they haven’t gone through what you have or achieved what you want, you likely shouldn’t be taking their advice. It is also disarming and unexpected.

-Concerned or disapproving?

This response directly challenges them and implies that their comments might be based on judgment rather than genuine concern. It also shifts the focus from your choices and onto them to justify their comment. It is also disarming, making them pause and reconsider their words. This example is a way to confront judgement without being overly confrontational.
