Definitive First Time Mom Must-Have List
Hi all,
This is it! The definitive (no, not really) list of things that 6 weeks in, I can honestly, and truthfully say have seen a TON of use one way or another. These are the items that I have found myself using over and over again, and would recommend you look into them too. So what does a first-time mom need for her baby? Take a look at the list below and my reasoning as to why, so let’s talk first-time mom must-haves! Please note: the below doesn’t include clothing. Check out my preemie and newborn cute outfit recommendations.
Definitive List of First-Time Mom Must Haves
The list below is quite extensive, but these are without a doubt, the items I use the most, and as you’ll see, some have two different brands, meaning I’ve tried both and loved them enough to share. I will also share below some of my personal observations of using them and feel free to ask below or reach out via email or IG DM if you have additional questions. Don’t forget also to check out my nursery reveal if you’re looking into what to do with your nursery!
Starting at the very top, the thing we likely use the most: diapers! These two brands I’m sharing below have been my go-tos. Dyper is a subscription based model of diapers that send you shipments on an ongoing basis, and can even send you emergency diapers if need be as well. They are good for the environment and for the baby, so I’m a big fan. The only con is that they run a bit large, or at least they do on my son who was born small at 4lbs 9oz. As a result, I needed to look into smaller diapers at first, and found these Huggies to be great for him as he slowly grows into the Dypers.
Speaking of diapers, we’re moving on to the changing pad that I’m using and it doubles as a scale, so it’s great to keep track of your baby’s growth. Along that, you need liners, and these I’m linking are great.
Bottles…. How many bottles have I gone through? I don’t even know. I tried so many brands, and settled on the Como Tomo bottles as they’re my favorite (and his) and were also highly recommended by experts in the area. As he’s gotten older though, he’s also now transitioning into the Phillips Avent Bottles and he’s been loving them as well.
Car Seats - I was recommended the Nuna Exec because it grows with you. It can go from newborn to booster seat, so while it’s a bit of an investment in the beginning, it’s one that will be used for a LOOOONG time. However, as Oliver was born a bit small, I was recommended to get tighter fitting one, so I also got the Maxi Cosi one as well.
I’ve gone through ALL the sleep sacks as I’ve documented on IG. Since Oliver was small, he’d move to sleep on his side and wake himself up sometimes so it was tough in the beginning. I tried ALL of them and the Halo was the one that worked for him the best because it allowed him to have his hands free, which he liked. The Halo also came in preemie size, which he needed and then moved on to newborn.
I’ve used the Boppy pillow for everything: feeding him, holding him, helping me be more comfortable, etc. This is an easy buy that you’ll use.
The tub I’ve been using and I LOVE (and I’ve received tons of questions from you guys) is the Puj tub. Highly recommend! Easy to store, and he seems to love it.
One of the best purchases according to the hubs has been the Genie diaper trash can. Since he’s usually on diaper duty, he has mentioned how easy it is to use and discard.
For Breast pumps, I’ve had mixed feelings and do note that I didn’t have the best luck in pumping or breastfeeding. I tried, but there just wasn’t enough produced. The Elvie pump is great because it goes in your bra and pumps without cables, or anything. It really allows you to do everything you’d do when not pumping. I did find it a bit hard to use and hard to position right. The Spectra came highly recommended by several moms and experts and it works great. Unlike the Elvie, it doesn’t quite let you do whatever as you pump, but this one is cordless, so at least you can move around.
For sleep time, we opted for a Newton breathable mattress and then use the Frida humidifier and Hatch rest sound machine and its proven to be great!
